- Synthetic Violin bows<p>Synthetic, or often referred to as Carbon fibre Violin bows (although not all are carbon fibre) offer playing qualities that are consistent and often comparable to much more expensive wooden Violin bows. It is therefore possible to produce a very reliable, balanced and consistent violin bow for a low price. Synthetic Violin bows are not affected by temperature or humidity variations so are an excellent choice if playing outside. It also means they are highly resistant to warping or losing their spring.</p>

More recently synthetic materials have started to catch on but the for now the wooden Violin bow is still very much part of playing the violin!</p> <p>Most wooden Violin bows are made from either Pernambuco or Brazilwood. It was in the 18th century that luthiers discovered that Pernambuco wood has a beautiful mix of strength and resilience that made it perfect for making a bow. It is however becoming more scarce and it is normally more expensive bows made from Pernambuco.</p> <p>Brazilwood is a composite of tropical wood species and slightly heavier than Pernambuco, which lessens the “feel” for the violinist. A Pernambuco wood bow is more responsive to the vibrations of the violin, which sends those vibrations back through the bow to the violinist’s hands. Brazilwood bows tend to be cheaper bows and while players are yet to discern the differences in bows, they are a very good option.</p> <p>Their denser weight is actually an advantage with very young students as it makes the bow more difficult to break.</p>

Budget violin cases are generally made of Styrofoam and offer good affordable protection. Wood shell cases offer the most protection but do tend to be heavy so as technology advances, cases are increasingly made of hi-tech material which normally has a carbon content making them light and strong.</p> <p>Shaped cases are lighter, more compact and more versatile whereas oblong cases provide extra space for larger shoulder rests and accessories and most have a sheet music pocket. There’s nothing more risky than putting a violin or viola down on a bed or standing a cello or Double bass in the corner while you have a break from practicing! One mishap could be the end of the instrument or at best a very expensive repair. Stands for violins (or violas), cellos and basses are essential for every player. If putting your violin away every time is hindering you practicing, try a violin wall hangar from Hercules or K&M – the instrument is right where you need it, when you need it!
- Shoulder restsViolin and Viola Shoulder rests are very personal and what suits one player may not suit another. Many young students start off with the Huber pad or Jegro shoulder pad before moving on to a shoulder rest. Most teachers would then have a preferred option – Kun and Wolf are the long standing favourites but there are now many very good and comfortable alternatives. If you’re undecided and in the area you’re most welcome to spend some time in the shop trying them to find one that suits you.

- Metronomes & TunersMetronomes & Tuners At Caswells Strings we carry a large range of Metronomes & Tuners from all the well known brands. The Intelli violin tuner is a best seller being simple and precise. For more accurate and general tuning, a clip on tuner that utilizes the vibrations is a good bet. Korg, Seiko and Snark are all quality brands. The Seiko electronic metronome is a compact best selling metronome while the Wittner mechanical metronomes are not only excellent to use but also look superb on the piano.
- Stools, Transport & Player comfortStools, Transport & Player comfort Looking after you back while you play is very important which is why the wedge cushion from Caswells Strings is one of our best selling products. Other products to help the Bass player include the leather carry strap, the high stool and the bass wheel which slots into the endpin.
- Cello and Bass floor anchorsCello and Bass floor anchors Cello and Bass floor anchors do just what they say – they go on the floor in front of you and anchor the cello so it doesn’t slide away. Generally speaking there is no advantage of one over the other except that some require a chair to anchor to. If a suitable chair is not available, one with a rubber backing is recommended such as the Blackhole or Viva floorstop. If you regularly play on a long pile carpet, an anchor with a strap is recommended. A recent development in floorstops is the resonator chamber which also enhances the sound.

- String adjustersString adjusters String adjusters are available for violin, viola and cello. There are different designs including different types of strings adjusters for loop or ball end strings. There is a choice of black, silver or black & gold. Titanium adjusters are light and have favourable resonance characteristics and although more expensive then the standard string adjusters, are growing in popularity.
- Chin rests and chin rest accessoriesThere is a huge amount of different shapes and sizes when it comes to Violin and Viola chinrests. At Caswells Strings we stock the most commonly asked for shapes (the 4 most being being Teka, Strad, Flesch and Guarneri pattern) but have access to every shape and size so if its not listed please give us a call. Most Violin Chinrests and Viola Chinrests are available in ebony, rosewood or boxwood and with a selection of clamps. Copies of these chinrests in plastic are ideal for inexpensive educational instruments. Wittner and Wolf chin rests are made of a non-allergenic material for persons who suffer from allergy and are also hardwearing, attractive options for education. SAS chinrests are popular for players needing extra height. We also stock a wide range of accessories to assist in making the chinrest more comfortable such as the Chinrest Lip, the Gelrest and the Stradpad.

- RosinRosin The question is often asked: Which rosin should I use? The following helpful information is provided by Pirastro: 1) High quality rosins enable perfect bowing without scratching, especially if only a thin layer has been applied. In general: Violinists and violists need harder or dryer rosins Cellists need a medium rosin Bassists need softer, stickier rosins 2) Another factor influencing the choice is the kind of core material of the string you use: Steel strings can be better played with a hard or dry rosin Synthetic and gut strings can be better played with soft-medium rosins 3) Experienced players tend to prefer softer rosins for the studio but harder rosins in the concert hall. Hard rosins are best in tropical climate and softer rosins in a colder climate. 4) Rosins do dry out and lose their characteristic formula so it is recommended using a cake for 1 year only.
