Well yes, indeed and in fact can be very destructive as heat causes an instrument’s wood to swell, or to warp, or to crack!
One of the most distressing causes of damage is when instruments are left in a closed car with the sun beating down – just recently I could hardly touch the steering wheel, it was so hot. It simply pays to be aware that direct exposure to the sun, or to heat whether too dry or too humid, is going to cause trouble and make your playing experience difficult.
So what can happen?
Cracking: When exposed to heat the instrument’s wood expands and the animal glue that binds its seams can soften, resulting in cracks and open seams.
Varnish: Varnish, too, can soften. This obviously brings problems because rosin, dirt, finger marks and even fabric (from the case) can permanently mark the instrument.
Bow: Exposed to extreme conditions your bow can react in a number of ways as the hair stretches and the wood warps, which can make it impossible to either loosen the bow or to tighten it fully.
So what should I do?
- Never leave an instrument in a closed car – let alone in the boot!
- Do not expose your instrument to direct sunlight or heat
- Be aware that if you move suddenly from a controlled atmosphere too hot outdoors conditions, it could cause problems
- Use a humidifier such as dampit. This is a soft tube filled with a sponge that slides neatly into the F-hole. Keep it topped up with water (distilled if possible)
