It is a question we’re often asked: What is the difference between the Yamaha V5SC and the Yamaha V5SA violin?
The actual violin, case and bow is exactly the same.
The difference is in the finish of the violin. The V5SA has a sprayed-on plain polyurethane Varnish while the V5SC violin has a hand brushed oil varnish finish. The latter is obviously a more expensive process adding to the price.
Because the finish has a great effect on the instrument’s tone, Yamaha have put research and time into testing various formulas and checking the results with acoustic measurements to develop an original oil finish that brings out the best tone. Applied by hand to maximize its affect, the finish enhances the instrument’s response and articulation while adding a beautiful glossy appearance. The sprayed-on finish does not have the same acoustic qualities.
The other difference between the two models is the V5SA has an ebony tailpiece with individual adjusters on it whereas the V5SC has a Wittner tailpiece with integrated adjusters.
