The original purpose of the Bow Hold Buddie for Violin or Viola was to prevent the thumb, index finger and ‘pinky’ from straying out of position. According to Ruth Brons, the inventor, “With these three fingers in place and in control of the stick, the other two fingers, hand and bow arm are more relaxed and ready to learn those beginning bow strokes”.
The Bow Hold buddie comprises two parts – the Frog and the Hold Fish. The Frog strongly encourages the thumb to remain bent while the Holdfish supports the little finger.
