STRING INSTRUMENT REPAIRS, RESTORATIONS, AND VALUATIONS
Caswells Strings has had a reputation for stringed instrument repairs stretching back some fifty years – a tradition that has continued to this day in our own in-house workshops.
Stringed Instrument Repairs
At Caswells Strings, we have our own on-site repair workshop where we carry out anything from minor repairs and string changes to major re-constructive repair work.
Bow Rehairs
Caswells stock a fine selection of bows, too many and too often changing to list them all on our website. This includes inexpensive student models for replacements where a repair is not commercially practical. We do also undertake a full bow rehairing service, violin, viola, cello and double bass bow rehairing, as well as full professional restorations to valuable bows by Nweark trained technicians. We use only high quality Canadian or Siberian horsehair. If you are able to visit the shop, loan bows may be available while we have your bow.
Instrument Repair Collection Service
We are conveniently located just off the M40. This makes it easy to reach us in under an hour from Birmingham, Coventry, Oxford, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes and Northampton and everywhere in between. We do of course welcome anyone from further afield and service many customers from the London area. See our address here.
We will collect from an educational establishment should you have 10 or more instruments that need repair. If you have a regular turnaround of instruments, please speak to us about a regular maintenance repair contract.
Buying With Confidence – The Caswells Strings Guarantee
Every violin, viola, cello or double bass which we supply through the shop or online, is put into the workshop, checked and set up to correct specifications. We believe the correct set-up is essential right from the first violin purchased by a beginner – a fact sadly overlooked by many suppliers cutting costs in order to ship instruments as cheap as possible.
This, of course, also enables us to offer a free service guarantee with every instrument we sell and to provide a wide-ranging expert repair facility.
Valuations
Ad hoc valuations are offered on instruments up to £2000 free of charge on examination in our shop, but should a certificate be required the charge is £45. Instruments that are more valuable may need to be left with us for 48hrs and may be referred on to a senior appraiser – who will issue a certificate at the agreed cost for insurance purposes. We cannot, however, do valuations at a distance or by phone apart from offering general guidelines. It is always helpful to bring any relevant documentation and certificates.
