The Westbury violin outfit is an excellent outfit for advancing students. The violin, made by Eastman strings, is hand carved maple and spruce with inlaid purfling and ebony fittings.
It is available in two options:
- Standard finish with dart shaped plywood case, brazilwood bow
- Antiqued finish with an oblong styrofoam case, brazilwood bow (NB: Case colour and style may vary slightly from image depending on availability)
The instrument is set up with the standard factory fitted strings but we offer here the option of further enhancing the instrument by upgrading the strings to Dominant violin strings.

Me – I am a complete novice to the violin but a clarinet, electric guitar, drum and mandolin player (all just as a hobby) for 30+ years. A couple of weeks ago I bought a student-level electric violin with composite bow to try out a new instrument. I fell in love with the violin so-much-so that I wanted an acoustic one. I decided a violin with an ebony fingerboard and better quality bridge, that was beyond “basic beginner”, would improve my experience and allow for some progression.
The violin – I chose the Westbury (Standard finish) as it was classed as an advancing student model. It is made by Eastmans who have a good reputation (my Eastmans mandolin is built to a high standard). The violin arrived without scratches and was setup well and plays nicely. I had upgraded to Dominant strings. The violin is comfortable, loud and mellow, with a great sound. The ebony pegs and tailpiece adjusters tune well. The wooden bow is a nice weight. I had to upgrade the chin rest on the electric violin but the one fitted to the Westbury feels perfect. The case is excellent with plenty of space for a shoulder rest, two bows, spare strings, cloth, rosin, peg paste, tuner, etc. The case is sturdy, secured with a zip and lockable catch, with a comfortable handle and straps for carrying on your back.
Cons – none but cosmetically it’s quite orange in colour so perhaps upgrade to the antiqued finish model if appearance is an issue for you. Weirdly, I only chose the Standard finish violin because I preferred the appearance of the case.
Caswell Strings – Good, easy to navigate website with photos and plenty of information on specifications. A large selection of instruments and accessories with stock levels. Accurate descriptions. Easy checkout. Customer service was excellent. Communication was good, phones were answered quickly. Dispatch was fast. DPD dellivery was with a 1 hour slot notification. Item was well packaged. A leaflet was enclosed explaining setup and any possible transit issues.
Overall, I am pleased with this online purchase and highly recommend Caswells Strings. I will buy again when adding to my collection of instruments.
