Description
The Warchal Karneol Viola string set has a synthetic core and produces well-balanced velvety tones, giving warmth and texture to your sound. They have a synthetic core, and normally require three days to achieve tuning stability and optimum tone quality.
Karneol viola strings come in two sizes depending on the speaking length of the viola. For instruments with exactly 38 cm vibrating length we advise choosing the medium size viola strings. To avoid damaging strings it is essential that Warchal viola string sizes are chosen according to the vibrating string length of your instrument and not its body length. The vibrating string length is the distance between the bridge and the nut. We find that the majority of violas have a Medium vibrating string length.

First time trying Warchal strings and decided to go for Karneol’s as within my usual budget for ‘mid-range’ strings. Normally use Zyex which produce a warm and rich/dark tone or sometimes Helicore for a slightly brighter sound. Both of which have great stability and response and a feel of quality. Have recently changed from Obligato which are superb and were a treat but budget wouldn’t stretch to another set! Day 4 and the Karneol’s are still nowhere near settling in and I have been retuning several times a day (not including each time I play them). The Karneol’s are much brighter and yet to hear the well-balanced velvety tones, giving warmth and texture to sound as in the description. The C & G string are okay although nothing special but D & A give a very metallic and scratchy sound that you often get with a lower priced student string. Overall, tone is quite harsh! Budget was £50-£60 and wanted to try something different but now regret not going with Zyex. Will give them another week to see if they do settle. Sadly, it’s likely I will have to restring with a mixture of old strings until I’ve saved up again due to the tone and instability. £50 wasted – I recommend going for Zyex or Helicore if looking for something in this price range as these don’t compare. Service from Caswell’s – 5 star/excellent as always. Shame about the strings!
