- Synthetic Violin bows<p>Synthetic, or often referred to as Carbon fibre Violin bows (although not all are carbon fibre) offer playing qualities that are consistent and often comparable to much more expensive wooden Violin bows. It is therefore possible to produce a very reliable, balanced and consistent violin bow for a low price. Synthetic Violin bows are not affected by temperature or humidity variations so are an excellent choice if playing outside. It also means they are highly resistant to warping or losing their spring.</p>

More recently synthetic materials have started to catch on but the for now the wooden Violin bow is still very much part of playing the violin!</p> <p>Most wooden Violin bows are made from either Pernambuco or Brazilwood. It was in the 18th century that luthiers discovered that Pernambuco wood has a beautiful mix of strength and resilience that made it perfect for making a bow. A Pernambuco wood bow is more responsive to the vibrations of the violin, which sends those vibrations back through the bow to the violinist’s hands. Budget violin cases are generally made of Styrofoam and offer good affordable protection. Wood shell cases offer the most protection but do tend to be heavy so as technology advances, cases are increasingly made of hi-tech material which normally has a carbon content making them light and strong.</p> <p>Shaped cases are lighter, more compact and more versatile whereas oblong cases provide extra space for larger shoulder rests and accessories and most have a sheet music pocket. If a suitable chair is not available, one with a rubber backing is recommended such as the Blackhole or Viva floorstop. If you regularly play on a long pile carpet, an anchor with a strap is recommended. A recent development in floorstops is the resonator chamber which also enhances the sound.

The following helpful information is provided by Pirastro: 1) High quality rosins enable perfect bowing without scratching, especially if only a thin layer has been applied. In general: Violinists and violists need harder or dryer rosins Cellists need a medium rosin Bassists need softer, stickier rosins 2) Another factor influencing the choice is the kind of core material of the string you use: Steel strings can be better played with a hard or dry rosin Synthetic and gut strings can be better played with soft-medium rosins 3) Experienced players tend to prefer softer rosins for the studio but harder rosins in the concert hall. Hard rosins are best in tropical climate and softer rosins in a colder climate. 4) Rosins do dry out and lose their characteristic formula so it is recommended using a cake for 1 year only.
