Jigs, Reels & More (Cello & piano) – Edward Huws Jones

Edward Huws Jones’s faithful arrangements of traditional music are now available for cello! Jigs, Reels & More is a collection of traditional tunes from England, Ireland and Scotland – some familiar, others less well-known, but all absolutely authentic.

Along with the jigs and reels you will find varieties of country and Morris dance, hornpipes, a strathspey, and some contrasting slow airs. “Jigs, Reels & More” is available in two formats: a complete edition which contains the cello melody with keyboard accompaniment and guitar chords; and a separate cello part.

All these tunes originally appeared in two companion volumes for violin: “Jigs, Reels & Hornpipes”and “The Ceildh Collection”. In “Jigs, Reels & More” they have been carefully transposed for maximum playability on the cello, and the keyboard accompaniments have been revoiced to create sonorities more appropriate to the lower instrument. Fifteen of the tunes in “Jigs, Reels & More” remain in the same keys as the versions in the violin books, and are therefore completely compatible with the originals. As a result, “Jigs, Reels & More” can also be used as an expandable resource with other string players.

Edward Huws Jones has travelled extensively researching folk music traditions. In “Jigs, Reels & More” he explains the background of each musical style, giving his own suggestions for a lively performance. And to help recreate the spirit of the music, the book is beautifully illustrated
