It adjusts to the shape of your chin, making any violin chinrest feel like it’s custom made. GelRests are not slippery, even when wet, so holding your instrument is comfortable and effortless, whether it’s a hot summer day or a cool autumn night. The GelRest does not have to be removed each time the violin is put away – just set it and forget it!
Does a comfortable violin matter? If productive practice time is important to you then, yes, the violin must be comfortable! One of the primary reasons for stopping a practice session is the violin is uncomfortable leading to extra tension in the hands and fingers. This makes progress in basic techniques more difficult then it needs to be.

I own two fine violins, the first of which has a Stradpad. This is very comfortable indeed and most closely resembles skin. The downside is its cost and very untidy appearance. It’s poorly hand-cut and the velcro underneath is visible through the surface as a bump. Enter the Gel pad. This is cheaper but still expensive for what it is. Appearance wise, it’s practically invisible when fitted and excellently shaped. It truly is. The downside is that it is noticeably firmer than the Strad pad and less comfortable. It is an improvement over the bare wood, but only marginally. I would replace it with the dearer Stradpad in a heartbeat if the latter were more professionally presented and a much better price.
