John Briant –
The arcus bows, compared to other wooden and carbon bows in the price range, are very noticeably lighter and somewhat stiffer. This results in a feeling of very direct control. I spend very little effort on moving the weight of the bow around, or on flexing the bow, and so I am able to direct all the effort to the contact between bow hair and strings. Or put less scientifically, if you close your eyes and play it feels like the stick is magically weightless and I am just moving the hairs around by magic. The upshot is that the pp can be quieter without sounding wispy and the subito pp is very ‘subito’, the spiccatto is easier, ff is louder, the fast string crossings are smoother. Love it. The S4 is the ‘fastest’ to play out of S4, M4 and T4.
