- Synthetic Violin bows<p>Synthetic, or often referred to as Carbon fibre Violin bows (although not all are carbon fibre) offer playing qualities that are consistent and often comparable to much more expensive wooden Violin bows. It is therefore possible to produce a very reliable, balanced and consistent violin bow for a low price. Synthetic Violin bows are not affected by temperature or humidity variations so are an excellent choice if playing outside. It also means they are highly resistant to warping or losing their spring.</p>

A Pernambuco wood bow is more responsive to the vibrations of the violin, which sends those vibrations back through the bow to the violinist’s hands. Budget violin cases are generally made of Styrofoam and offer good affordable protection. Wood shell cases offer the most protection but do tend to be heavy so as technology advances, cases are increasingly made of hi-tech material which normally has a carbon content making them light and strong.</p> <p>Shaped cases are lighter, more compact and more versatile whereas oblong cases provide extra space for larger shoulder rests and accessories and most have a sheet music pocket. Many young students start off with the Huber pad or Jegro shoulder pad before moving on to a shoulder rest. Most teachers would then have a preferred option – Kun and Wolf are the long standing favourites but there are now many very good and comfortable alternatives. If you’re undecided and in the area you’re most welcome to spend some time in the shop trying them to find one that suits you.

The Seiko electronic metronome is a compact best selling metronome while the Wittner mechanical metronomes are not only excellent to use but also look superb on the piano.

- Cello and Bass floor anchorsCello and Bass floor anchors Cello and Bass floor anchors do just what they say – they go on the floor in front of you and anchor the cello so it doesn’t slide away. Generally speaking there is no advantage of one over the other except that some require a chair to anchor to. If a suitable chair is not available, one with a rubber backing is recommended such as the Blackhole or Viva floorstop. If you regularly play on a long pile carpet, an anchor with a strap is recommended. A recent development in floorstops is the resonator chamber which also enhances the sound.

- String adjustersString adjusters String adjusters are available for violin, viola and cello. There are different designs including different types of strings adjusters for loop or ball end strings. There is a choice of black, silver or black & gold. Titanium adjusters are light and have favourable resonance characteristics and although more expensive then the standard string adjusters, are growing in popularity.
- Chin rests and chin rest accessoriesThere is a huge amount of different shapes and sizes when it comes to Violin and Viola chinrests. At Caswells Strings we stock the most commonly asked for shapes (the 4 most being being Teka, Strad, Flesch and Guarneri pattern) but have access to every shape and size so if its not listed please give us a call. Most Violin Chinrests and Viola Chinrests are available in ebony, rosewood or boxwood and with a selection of clamps. Copies of these chinrests in plastic are ideal for inexpensive educational instruments. Wittner and Wolf chin rests are made of a non-allergenic material for persons who suffer from allergy and are also hardwearing, attractive options for education. SAS chinrests are popular for players needing extra height. We also stock a wide range of accessories to assist in making the chinrest more comfortable such as the Chinrest Lip, the Gelrest and the Stradpad.

- RosinRosin The question is often asked: Which rosin should I use? The following helpful information is provided by Pirastro: 1) High quality rosins enable perfect bowing without scratching, especially if only a thin layer has been applied. In general: Violinists and violists need harder or dryer rosins Cellists need a medium rosin Bassists need softer, stickier rosins 2) Another factor influencing the choice is the kind of core material of the string you use: Steel strings can be better played with a hard or dry rosin Synthetic and gut strings can be better played with soft-medium rosins 3) Experienced players tend to prefer softer rosins for the studio but harder rosins in the concert hall. Hard rosins are best in tropical climate and softer rosins in a colder climate. 4) Rosins do dry out and lose their characteristic formula so it is recommended using a cake for 1 year only.
